Ideal body weight formulas estimate a target weight from height and sex. They share a common shape: a base weight at 5 feet (152.4 cm) plus an amount for each inch above that. The classic Devine formula is 50 kg (men) or 45.5 kg (women) plus 2.3 kg per inch over 5 feet. Robinson uses 52 kg / 49 kg plus 1.9 kg and 1.7 kg per inch. Miller uses 56.2 kg / 53.1 kg plus 1.41 kg and 1.36 kg per inch. Hamwi uses 48 kg / 45.5 kg plus 2.7 kg and 2.2 kg per inch. Because each was fitted to different data, comparing all four gives a realistic spread rather than one fixed figure.
This calculator converts your height to inches above 5 feet, applies each formula, and shows the results side by side. If you choose imperial units the answers are converted back to pounds. For heights below 5 feet the formulas extrapolate downward, so treat very short or very tall results with extra caution.
Why the healthy BMI range matters
A single "ideal" number can be misleading, so the tool also shows the weight range that keeps your body mass index between 18.5 and 24.9 for your height. This range is calculated as 18.5 × height(m)² to 24.9 × height(m)². Many clinicians prefer a healthy range because it allows for differences in frame, muscle and personal history rather than implying one weight is correct.
How to use the numbers
Use these estimates as a rough guide, not a target you must hit. They do not account for muscle mass, bone density, body composition or athletic training, so a muscular person can be healthy well above their "ideal" weight.
